Chatter during machining not only causes poor surface finish but also reduces spindle life. Averse to chatter, manufacturers operate their HSM machine tools at very low depths of cuts and compromise productivity. In addition to productivity benefits, HSM also enables machining of thin walls with high aspect ratios due to inherent low cutting forces.
Knowledge of machine tool dynamics and specific cutting forces will enable to predict stability lobes. Stability lobes show the spindle speeds where higher depths of cut can be given without any chatter.
Several associated technologies for predicting Stability Lobes viz. Receptance Coupling, Tool Tip FRF Prediction, Cutting Coefficient Identification are also developed.
